ARTIST SELECTS 'CURVACEOUS KISS' AS TITLE
For those who wondered: The winning title for Russ RuBert's metal sculpture
installed last fall in Cary, N.C., is "Curvaceous Kiss." The 23-foot tall
sculpture, which stood in front of his Springfield studio for a time, has
been noted for its resemblance to a Hershey Kiss, says RuBert who received
hundreds of suggestions.
Though he's noted for his distinct metal work, RuBert also has worked in
neon for 25 years. One new temporary interactive kinetic sculpture
installation, titled "Positronic Neural Network," is part of the "MomentuM"
exhibit on display this month through Sept. 24 at the prestigious Grounds
for Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J. About 1,200 attended the May 13 opening, he
says.
His sculpture features four pod-like shapes, based on a brain's synapses.
Each "synapse" is filled with 3-dimensional neon pieces salvaged from
various Springfield businesses, he says: "We used 108,000 volts to light the
whole thing. The different shapes change colors. They light up. It's very
popular."
Another installation appears in June at the International Sculpture Center
conference in Cincinnati.
