Saturday, May 24, 2008 - Missouri Botanical Garden - St. Louis, Missouri
By request again of our adventurers who said we hadn’t spent enough time in the gorgeous gardens last trip, we return for a full day of activities to the “Crown Jewel” of Missouri’s artistic treasures. A dutch-treat lunch will be taken in Sassafras, the garden’s on-site restaurant after which travelers are encouraged to stroll leisurely among the many exquisite Springtime floral landscapes, reflecting pools, statuary and sculpture for a true riparian experience. A visit to the world-famous Buckminster Fuller-designed Climatron for desert and tropical landscapes is a delight not to be missed! The gift shop at the garden is a real treasure trove for plant and gardening lovers. (Last trip, our faithful adventurer Dudley Martin found some fantastic exotic bulbs for his garden!) A dutch-treat dinner at Sybil’s Saint James Restaurant and Gift Shop is planned for the midway point of the trip home (adventurers loved the fine cuisine the last trip).
Springfield mosaic artist Christine Schilling will join the Springfield Regional Arts Council’s May 24th Arts Adventure to the Missouri Botanical Gardens and will give a tour of the Gardens' featured exhibit of some 40 monumental mosaic sculptures by the late Niki de Saint Phalle. Created in rainbow colors and with a variety of materials, some stand18-feet tall and others weigh over a ton.
The tour will leave the Creamery Arts Center at 7:00 A.M. and return at 9:30 P.M. Cost of the tour is $80 which includes round-trip transportation, the entrance fee for the Gardens, Champagne, nuts and chocolates on the return and a 6:30 A.M. coffee reception in the Arts Council offices.
