Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Liberty Memorial, Kansas City, MO @ 08:00 AM

Saturday, July 19, 2008 - Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Liberty Memorial - Kansas City, Missouri

Before there was the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, before there was the Block Building addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum, before there was the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum at Washington University and before there was the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas, which we visit in September, there was the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City.

Designed by the Eero Saarinen-trained Latvian-American architect, Gunnar Birkerts, this iconic, small museum is uniquely situated close to the Nelson-Atkins and right next door to the legendary Kansas City Art Institute. Think Thomas Hart Benton as a teacher there along with pupil, Jackson Pollock! We return to this first museum dedicated to contemporary art for its brilliant collection and its ever changing cutting-edge exhibits. A singular delight is our lunch stop, Café Sébastienne, whose walls are covered with one painting, The History of Art by Frederick J. Brown. After our dutch-treat lunch, we tour the $102,000,000 restoration of Liberty Memorial which celebrates the conclusion of the “war to end all wars”. Maréchal Foch and General John J. Pershing were among the dignitaries who attended the opening on November 11, 1926.

This tour will leave The Creamery Arts Center at 8:00 A.M. and return at 6:30 P.M. The cost for this tour will be $60 including round-trip transportation, an early morning coffee reception at 7:30 A.M. in the Arts Council offices with Champagne, nuts and chocolates on the return trip.

For more information contact the Springfield Regional Arts Council at 417-862-ARTS (2787) or Info@SpringfieldArts.org.
