Recurring Workshops

Artist’s Way Clusters
Described by the author as “a course in discovering
and recovering your creative self.” Artist’s Way has
proved very helpful to artists in all fields...visual,
performing and literary. The course is also a
successful took for writers or performing artists who
suffer “writers’ block”, “performance angst”, or
“who just can’t seem to find the time” to work on
their writing or audition pieces.
Call the Arts Council to sign up for the 6-week
cluster. No Fee except Arts Council membership.

 

Creamery Writers’ Workshop
For writers of all levels, genres. No fee.
Every Thursday

Teen Writing Workshops
Come prepared to discover, express and share
your unique self while creating prose and poetry.
Instructor: Jenny Laper
Ages: 13 -18
Date: 6 week course every Wednesday
Time: 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Workshops offered year-round. No fee except $5 Arts
Council membership. No prior experience needed.

Jordon Valley Jazz Band
Springfield’s first community youth Jazz Band for high school
students who want to continue or begin the
fulfilling experience of playing jazz.
Auditions by appt. throughout the school year.
Call 417-862-ARTS.
Instructor : Tom Rastorfer
Rastorfer gained extensive teaching experience
working for Jamey Aebersold’s jazz workshops
and was on Aebersold’s full-time staff from 1998-
2001. Rastorfer has performed professionally with
the Motown Experience, Bobby Vinton, the
Lawrence Welk Show and has performed with
Jamey Aebersold, Glen Campbell, Andy Williams
and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
Ages: 9th- 12th grade
Rehearsals: Tuesday evenings, 7 p.m.- 9 p.m.
Cost: $5 Arts Council Membership Fee

Past Workshops

Japanese Calligraphy
Learn the beauty and style of Japanese
Calligraphy. A highly individualistic art form
that has been studied for over three thousand
years in the Orient, Japanese calligraphy
(sho in Japanese) attempts to bring words to
life and endow them with character.
Instructor: Izumi Loomis
Loomis is a native of Japan who has taken Japanese
calligraphy lessons throughout her childhood and
also learned from her grandfather at home. She
holds a Shodan degree in Japanese calligraphy.

Egg Design Series
Pysanky Egg Design
Learn the traditional Ukrainian craft of the
Pysanky egg. Using a method similar to batik,
students will draw patterns with wax and
then use different colors of dye to produce a
beautiful multi-colored pattern on each egg.
Study symbols and colors rich in meaning and
create stunning works of art!
Instructor:Jamie Lewis
Lewis worked as a freelance illustrator for Rodale
Press and has done various commission works.

Washi Egg Design
Learn how to make beautiful egg ornaments by
covering real eggs with Japanese Paper (Washi). These
eggs are a traditional craft of Japan and make for a
beautiful accent in your home.
Instructor: Mika Logan

Fearless Drawing Series

 

Fearless Drawing - Beginner's
This workshop introduces adult beginners
to the elements of design using effective and
“painless” artistic exercises for their visual
brain. The instructor will focus on teaching
how to easily draw complex shapes,
observing and using realistic light and
shadow, learning simple tricks to defeat the
problems of proportion and perspective, and creating
interesting compositions.
Instructor: Mary Hamilton
Hamilton was a Springield Public Schools art teacher for 15 years and is now a full time artist and owner of Custom Art and Design. Hamilton's painting have been featured in numerous galleries in Springfield

Tuesday March 11 - April 15, 9:00 am - noon

Fearless Drawing - Intermediate
This course is a continuation of the Beginner Adult Fearless
Drawing. Students will increase their visual muscles through
more “painless” artistic exercises for the right side of the
brain. New mediums such as pastel, charcoal, pen and ink
and collage will be introduced. Let’s DRAW!

Spanish Mosaics: The Gaudi Influence
Sample a full palate of Spanish culture!
Explore Gaudi’s mosaic-covered architecture and Park Guell’s
ceramic tile park benches and animals. Inspired by Gaudi’s
vision, each student will create a mosaic-covered sculptural
form or tile and make plans to design a mosaic bench. Each
week, the class will sample a bit of Spanish music and cuisine.
Instructor: Christine Schilling
Schilling is a sculptor with many years on the Missouri
Arts Council’s roster of Artists-In-Education and has
spearheaded numerous mosaic murals, outdoor sculptures
and public art projects.

Linoleum Block Printmaking
Create your own note cards or small print using relief
printmaking. Each student will make multiple cards and
learn the necessary techniques for linoleum block
printmaking. Prints will be monochromatic. Students are
invited to bring an idea or a design sketch to the class.
Instructor: Cynthia Moore
Moore is an artist/printmaker with ten years of teaching
experience. She has an M.F.A. in printmaking from the
University of Iowa and has shown her artwork in national
juried art shows.

Landscape Drawing and Painting
Draw and paint ALONG with Hing Wah Hatch from thefantastic views seen from the windows of the Creamery. Learn about perspective and foreshortening, drawing techniques in charcoal and color-mixing in acrylic or oil. Bring your own materials; we’ll provide a basic list.
