About National Arts Program
Springfield is the first city and one of only two in Missouri to participate in the National Arts Program designed to provide people a free and uninhibited opportunity to bring forth their artistic talents, at any level, and to have their work displayed professionally.
For the month of June and opening First Friday, June 6th, the Springfield Regional Arts Council will be hosting at The Creamery Arts Center the National Arts Program featuring artwork created by City of Springfield employees and their families. Sponsored by the National Arts Foundation of Malvern, PA, local artists of various levels of artistic expertise and ages are participating in this first-time event. A reception will be held at the Creamery (across from Hammons Field), free to the public, on Friday, June 6, from 6pm to 9pm.
For a comprehensive list of featured city employee artists, see below.
Over 120 pieces of artwork will be exhibited at the Creamery Arts Center, ranging from works on paper to photography to 3-D pieces. Awards will be given June 6th at 8 pm for first, second, and third place winners in five classifications: Amateur, Intermediate, Professional, Youth (under 12 years), and Youth (12-18 years).
As part of the Arts Council’s ARTalks program, from 6pm to 7pm on June 6, local art therapist Rebecca Burrell, Ed.D., from Drury’s School of Education and Child Development will speak on “Living Creatively through Art – the Art of Living Well” and music therapist Elizabeth Losson, a graduate of the Drury Music Therapy program now practicing in Springfield, will also participate in this informal chat about how art can play an important healing role in the lives of those who work long hours or are in stressful positions.
