About Poetry Out Loud
Congratulations to 2008 winner, Vernon Meidlinger-Chin from Springfield Central High School. Vernon will compete at the State Competition on Tuesday, March 18 in Jefferson City, MO.
The Southwest Regional Competition was held Tuesday, Feburary 19 at 6:30 p.m. at The Creamery Arts Center located in Downtown Springfield, Missouri.

- Republic High School
- Springfield Central High School
- Waynesville High School
- Willow Springs High School
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with the State Arts Agencies to create Poetry Out Loud which invites the dynamic aspects of “slam poetry”, spoken word and theatre into the English class, helping students master public-speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their own literary heritage.
Poetry Out Loud is a collaboration of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Missouri Arts Council, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Capital City Council of the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and the Springfield Regional Arts Council.
Poetry Out Loud is held on three levels – regional, state, and national.
