About Creamery Writers' Workshop
The class will meet on Thursday nights in the Creamery Arts Center on John Q. Hammons Parkway, across from Hammons Field, at 7:00 pm. The class will run from 1 hour to 1 & ½ hours, and will meet every Thursday
The structure of the class will be modeled on successful writing workshops, and will draw heavily on established as well as avant-garde theories about the art of writing. It will also include discussion topics from John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, Rollo May’s The Courage to Create, and John Gardner’s The Art of Fiction and On Becoming a Novelist, as well as John Daido Loori’s The Zen of Creativity.
This class will not be recreational, except in the sense that it will be rewarding and, hopefully, fun.
The class will be taught in two distinct portions: 1) the lecture portion, which will consist of discussions on writing subjects, and 2) the workshop portion, which will consist of critiques of work submitted by participants.
Upcoming events:
Calling All Scribes!
On Thursday, June 28, Springfield Regional Arts Council’s Creamery Writers' Workshop will host guest lecturer, Gregory Holman, editor of 417 Magazine and who also oversees content of other magazines published by Whitaker Publishing.
Holman will be sharing thoughts on the relationship between writers and editors. Other topics to be covered include writing query letters to publishers, options for revisions and how writers are paid. He will also speak about his life as a writer and how the role of editor gives him dual perspectives on the craft. The 30-minute lecture will be followed by a chance for workshop attendees to pose questions.
The Creamery Writers' Workshop, a free literary outreach program of the Arts Council, is open to all writers regardless of age or writing genre, and offers a very supportive atmosphere for both fledgling and published authors every Thursday, 7 to 8:30pm, in The Creamery Arts Center, 411 N. Sherman Parkway across from Hammons Field. Those who attend have an opportunity to submit portions of works-in-progress for “gentle” critiques and comments by group members.
Writers may attend any meeting without advance registration. For information, contact the Springfield Regional Arts Council, 417-862-2787 or visit www.springfieldarts.org <http://www.springfieldarts.org/> .
