Creamery Writers’ Workshop To Feature Drury Professor On “Scene Building”

Springfield Regional Arts Council will host Drury Professor Jo Van Arkel at its May 29th Creamery Writers’ Workshop taking place from 7PM to 8:30PM in the Creamery Arts Center across from Hammons Baseball Stadium. Van Arkel will talk on “Scene Building: The Long and Short of It”, focusing on the idea of the scene as the primarily building block for fiction, from Flash Fiction and Short Shorts to the Novel. A professor of English at Drury University, Van Arkel has published fiction in several literary magazines including The Literary Review, The Northwest Review, Big Muddy, The Rockford Review and others. She is a past winner of the Missouri Writers Biennial Award and author of three books: The Things I've Got Growing Deep Down Inside, Give Me A Hat to Wear, and A Keeper of Seeds. Van Arkel has taught writing throughout the midwest, most recently at Morehead State in Morehead, Ky. She received her M.F.A. in fiction writing from the University of Oregon. The Creamery Writers’ Workshop is open to all writers regardless of age, level of writing or genre, and meets every Thursday in the Creamery Arts Center.
