Get on Board! The Frisco Rolls to a Park Central Location!

Friday, June 13, 2008

"Get on Board For a Night at the Museum!” The History Museum for Springfield/Greene County extends an invitation for a very special evening that showcases “The Frisco – the Railroad that Made Springfield Great!” The event will be held Thursday, June 26, 2008, 154 Park Central Square, the former Barths Clothing Store, from 7 –10 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.

The event will preview “The Frisco – The Railroad that made Springfield Great”. This exhibit is a collaborative effort of The History Museum for Springfield and Greene County, The Greene County Libraries, The Special Collections Department of Missouri State University, The Greene County Archives and The Railroad Museum at Grant Beach Park. A large schedule of events at several locations will tell the story of the railroads final arrival, growth, and enormous impact on the area. Due to the size and scope of the story to tell this is the first unified effort by these local community organizations in what is hoped will be an ongoing partnership to provide insight into the areas past and its impact on the City and County.

The Thursday evening pre-exhibit event has a two fold purpose – to preview the museum’s newest exhibit and to celebrate the History Museum for Springfield-Greene County’s purchase of the historic Nathans-Barths Building at 154 Park Central Square.

Museum Board President Andrew Baird comments, “We are very excited for the opportunity to move the museum to a more accessible, prominent location. We are going to build on all the energy and commitment that has been put into the Museum since 1976, and we are going to take advantage of the chance to re-imagine and update what the Museum has to offer to the people of Springfield and Greene County, and to visitors to the community.”

“We are delighted to have been given this opportunity to be more accessible to our patrons and play a larger role in the downtown community,” says Executive Director John Sellars.

The Museum plans to occupy the building this summer with the “Get on Board: The Frisco, The Railroad That Made Springfield Great” beginning June 28th and running through September 20th . The schedule of activities can be found at www.springfieldhistorymuseum.org or by calling 417.864.1976.

The official opening of the exhibit will feature all of the community partners in an opening ceremony at the footbridge on Commercial Street Saturday June 28th at 12:30 p.m.
