The Springfield Symphony was awarded $20,000 from the C.W. Titus Foundation to present a free, family-friendly outdoor concert in Jordan Valley Park on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

“The purpose of presenting a concert of this caliber is to provide a free concert tailored to families outside of the performance hall and classroom,” said Jeana Varney, marketing manager for the Springfield Symphony. “It will focus on introducing and exposing the orchestra and classical repertoire to children and families in a non-formal setting.”

The concert will be led by Music Director/Conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett and will feature an original script written by a local playwright and children’s theatre director. The script will be tailored for a young actor to perform as narration to the performance. Our young actor will play a colorful character, interact with the conductor and orchestra, and address the young audiences directly as a peer to teach them about the music and composers.

Prior to the performance, free activities will be provided for the families to participate in. An instrument petting zoo, a face painting station, balloon twisters, and a painting station hosted by the Springfield Regional Arts Council are a few of the planned activities.

The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and an Equal Opportunity Employer. Additional funding for all Springfield Symphony Orchestra programming is provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
