After careful consideration of the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the Springfield Regional Arts Council and Downtown Springfield Association have made the very difficult decision to cancel their combined Artsfest and Cider Days event on Historic Walnut Street, originally scheduled for Sept. 19-20, 2020.
“The safety of our artists, staff, volunteers and community are of our utmost concern and we feel at this time it is the right thing to do,” Jennifer Moseley, DSA Event Manager, said. “We believe it is vitally important that we find ways to support our artists through this unprecedented time. We are working on ways to advocate for them even though we can’t hold our big Walnut Street celebration.”
More information on a Together for the Arts digital campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.
“This pandemic has been extremely hard on our entire community,” Leslie Forrester, Executive Director for the Springfield Regional Arts Council, said. “The arts have certainly felt the full effect of the ongoing closures and limitations put in place to battle Covid-19. Artsfest has always been the crown jewel of the SRAC’s work to promote the arts and provide opportunities for artists, so canceling the event again is deeply disappointing. The decision ultimately came down to doing what is best to keep our patrons, artists, staff and the community safe. Luckily as an arts organization, we will find creative new ways to adjust and continue advocating for artists and the arts organizations in our community. We aren’t going away, we will be celebrating creativity and the arts in a different format for this year.”
For 40 years, the Springfield Regional Arts Council, along with the DSA, has celebrated the arts and the coming of spring with Artsfest on Historic Walnut Street at the beginning of May. Additionally, Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street has celebrated the fall season for more than 20 years. Those iconic events will return, stronger than ever in 2021.
The 40th Artsfest on Historic Walnut Street will be May 1-2, 2021. Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street is scheduled for Sept. 18-19, 2021.
