Praise God for the gift of painting. When I paint, I am drawn into my own world, just me and the canvas. The moment I began oil painting as a teenager, I was smitten and my love for painting continues to grow."

Much of what I do in the studio is deeply influenced by both modern and ancient art, and I revel at exploring any and all art museums hoping to infuse style and influence from other times and cultures into my work. I am particularly fond of abstract expressionism and expressionism in general for the way those styles communicate the individuality and spirit of the artist. I enjoy working in both acrylic and oil, but also like to use a combination of charcoal and pastels in my mixed media work.
Observation and curiosity drive my studio practice. Through the investigation of and experimentation with different kinds of materials, I express discontent with the current political climate as well as reflect on my experiences growing up in the American Midwest. My work explores entropy, artifice, consumerism, and my place in the lineage of abstraction in contemporary and modern painting and its relationship with installation art.
I have had a love for the landscape since I was a child accompanying my father, an agriculture teacher, visiting his student’s projects, driving the back roads in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The central focus of my work is the landscape in contemporary realism form. There is a complexity found in each scene that is simplified to some extent, at the same time retaining the essence of the place at hand by incorporating many layers of paint that play hide and seek with depth of field and detail.
I paint fleeting moments of beauty found in the landscape. It is not that beauty is rare, I believe the opposite is true, every moment is beautiful but it is also always changing. My art is an attempt at capturing that moment before it is gone. I am especially inspired by skies, water and trees. I love to paint outside whenever possible, because all of your senses are involved in the experience. In the studio I work from sketches and photographs. I paint with both oils and watercolors depending on my mood and the circumstances.
