Fresh Gallery Presents Rare Early 20th-Century Masterwork: “Nymphs and Satyr” Underpainting
Springfield, MO – October 2025 curatorial theme is “Darkness and Mysticism” and Fresh Gallery is proud to unveil an exhibition unlike any other. Opening October 3 2025, the gallery will showcase a monumental early 20th-century rendering of Nymphs and Satyr, presented in its almost-complete underpainting form.
At 6 feet by 8 feet, this extraordinary work draws viewers into the shadowed interplay of myth and allegory, while its unfinished state reveals the mystical process of creation itself. Rarely do audiences have the opportunity to study the Old Masters’ techniques so directly—visible brushwork, layered tonalities, and the spectral outlines that later become form.
“This piece embodies both the mystery and discipline of classical art,” said Jennifer Hyde, curator of Fresh Gallery. “By presenting the work in this rare stage of underpainting, we invite viewers not only to engage with mythological subject matter, but to glimpse the hidden, almost mystical journey of its making.”
The subject of Nymphs and Satyr—a timeless exploration of beauty, nature, and desire—resonates with the gallery’s exploration of Darkness and Mysticism, as mythological figures move between shadow and light, reality and legend.
